Happy Food Revolution Day

First of all a huge thank you to our parent helpers this morning: Mrs Jorgensen (kale maker extraordinaire), Mrs Gough, Mrs Tuffley, Mrs McLaren, Mrs Gonzales, Mrs McNaught, Miss Cunningham, Mrs Criddle and Mrs Finn.

Today we took part along with millions of other children around the world in Jamie Oliver's food Revolution. We listened to his video and rap about looking after your body because we only have one! Also our half the world are starving while the other half are consuming too much. We talked about the importance of not being wasteful and eating foods that are in season. We used vegetables from our very own garden and made our own hummus- it was so easy, delicious and nutritious.

St Joseph's Smash It Sandwich!
- Whole grain bun or roll
-Hummus
-Cucumber
-Various lettuce leaves
-Carrot

Hummus
Can of Chick peas, Tahini, garlic, olive oil (we used rice bran oil) and blend.

Mix all the vegetables together in a bowl, spread hummus onto a bun, add the veggies and smash it together. ENJOY

Kale Chips
a bunch of Kale leaves, one teaspoon of seasoned salt, One tablespoon of Olive Oil

  1. Preheat an oven to 175 degrees C. Line a non insulated cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. With a knife or kitchen shears carefully remove the leaves from the thick stems and tear into bite size pieces. Wash and thoroughly dry kale with a salad spinner. Drizzle kale with olive oil and sprinkle with seasoning salt.
  3. Bake until the edges brown but are not burnt, 10 to 15 minutes.

  4. Charlie highly recommended the kale chips so I think it will be getting tried at our household one day very soon. Great way of broadening food groups for the children by offering this experience!
